Alternative solutions
Alternative solution means a substitute for an acceptable solution
Division A, Sentence 1.4.1.2. of the building code
What is an alternative solution?
Fire Orders set by the City and the Fire Department can be overwhelming. Requirements needing to be installed in a residential building can get expensive quick.
Alternative solutions are different methods of achieving residence safety without providing the usual requirements - as long as they meet or exceed the safety standards in the building code.
We have saved our clients thousands of dollars by proposing different methods to achieve Fire Code standards for decades.
Building Code Intent
The intent of building codes is to ensure that buildings are safe, accessible, structurally sound, and efficient.
As long as an alternative solution can demonstrate that it meets or exceeds the safety standards and functionality outlined in the code, it may be approved.
Approval Process
Depending on the complexity of the solution, an assessment or report from an expert (fire protection engineer, structural engineer) will be necessary.
The solution must be based on scientific data, performance testing, and best practices.
Key Points
Alternative Solutions offer flexibility in design and construction, enabling projects to meet safety and performance goals even when traditional methods or materials are not viable.
